How to Filter Activities Impacted by a Delay Event
In project management, filtering the delays in activities can have falling effects on dependent tasks and overall project timelines. Identifying the impacted activities and understanding the critical path affected by the delayed activity is essential for effective mitigation planning.
Primavera P6 provides powerful tools to analyze these impacts, including filters and the Activity Critical Path tool. This article will outline the steps to filter impacted activities and use the Activity Critical Path tool to determine the critical path affected by a delayed activity.
But if you want to filter the delayed activity to a milestone, Check this Article.

1. Apply this to a real project
Example: For a project suspended and resumed later, the activity “Work Resumed After Suspension” would represent the delayed event. This activity’s delay can fall through the schedule and impact other dependent activities.
2. Use the Activity Critical Path Tool on the delay event
The Activity Critical Path tool helps identify the critical path affected by the delayed activity. This is critical for determining the overall project impact and recalibrating the schedule.
From the right toolbar, we choose the Activity Critical path tool.
This article will explain all the details you may need to know about the Activity Critical Path tools: Activity Critical Path Toolbar Icons.
To Show the Activity Critical Path Toolbar:
o Right-click on the right bar in Primavera P6
o Check on the Activity Critical Path

For the following Picture, We will click on the delay event which is “Work resumed after the Suspension” Then we will go to the critical path icons and we will choose “Show activity Critical paths”
Once you click on the “Show activity critical paths”, it will show the critical activities related to the delayed event “Work resumed after the Suspension”
So this is the new critical path connected to the delay event and it is possible to have many critical paths related to the same Activity.
The first critical path shows the highest negative float to the project and the longest sequence with project milestones.
By selecting “Show More Critical Path,” you can display multiple critical paths associated with the same activity, each with less float than the project’s total float.
Check this article “Activity Critical Path Toolbar Icons” to learn how to show more than multiple critical paths associated with the same activity.
You can use these screenshots in your EOT Claim to show the impact of the delay event on the time schedule and the critical path related to the delay event. By visually presenting the affected critical paths and impacted activities, you can provide clear evidence to support your claims.
The Basic way to Filter Activities Impacted by a Delay Event is to filter the Delayed Event only and go to the driving successors.
Mitigation Planning
After identifying impacted activities and understanding the critical path, you can:
- Re-sequence Activities:
- Evaluate if tasks can be re-sequenced or parallelized to reduce delays.
- Allocate Additional Resources:
- Assign additional labor or equipment to critical tasks to accelerate progress.
- Negotiate Extensions:
- If delays are unavoidable, communicate the findings with stakeholders to negotiate project deadline extensions or scope adjustments.
