Plaster in Residential Projects
1. Definition of Plaster in Construction
Plaster refers to a building material used for coating walls and ceilings to achieve a smooth, even, and durable surface. It is typically applied in a wet form, spread over masonry, concrete, or other surfaces, and then allowed to dry and harden. Plaster acts as both a protective layer and a decorative finish, providing a base for paint or other finishes.

Plaster in residential projects usually involves cement-based plaster for external walls due to its strength and weather resistance.

Sequence in Primavera P6
1. Method Statement Phase
Why is it needed?
A method statement is essential for ensuring quality, safety, and compliance with specifications. It outlines how the plastering activity will be executed, controlled, and inspected.
Why is a Method Statement important?
- To gain approval from the consultant before work starts
- To ensure the correct sequence and standards are followed
- For quality assurance and traceability on-site
Method statement activity can be followed by shop drawings of the block work, which is mandatory for the plastering works too.
2. Procurement Phase
Why is it needed?
Though plastering uses common materials, the procurement process is still necessary for proper planning, scheduling, and quality control.
Why Procurement is important to show in P6 for the plastering:
- To ensure the timely availability of quality materials
- To allow for sample approval or mock-up work
- To avoid delays due to material shortages or rejections
3. Construction Phase
Plaster is usually split into two activities. The first one is plastering Spatterdash (Splash/Dash Coat) and Dots, and the second is plastering the final layer.
MEP is usually the successor activity to the plastering spatterdash and dots. The plaster spatterdash and dots (first layer) are then applied, and then the final plastering layer (second layer). The plastering final layer is a predecessor to the first coat of paint.
Some planners, while creating the baseline schedule, do not separate the masonry into two activities since they are most likely to happen after each other, so they add only one activity, “Plastering works”, and increase the duration of this activity to cover the two processes.
