Engineering Power BI Dashboard [Multi-Project Power BI Dashboard]
In the previous articles, we explored the core structure of our enterprise Power BI dashboard, starting with high-level pages that track cost variance, progress, manpower, and delays, and then diving deeper into procurement, where we monitored material status from planning to site delivery.
But no project can move forward without a steady flow of approved technical documentation. Engineering submittals, including shop drawings, design documents, and method statements, are essential for aligning field execution with design intent.
In this article, we shift the focus to the Engineering Power BI Dashboard, a dedicated section built to track the status of all submittals across your project portfolio.

Whether you need to monitor submission timelines, approval codes, or design revisions, this dashboard provides complete visibility, helping engineering and planning teams avoid delays caused by documentation bottlenecks.
Fully integrated into the same enterprise reporting environment, this dashboard makes managing technical submittals just as structured and data-driven as cost, time, and procurement.

Submittals Status
At the center of this page is a funnel chart that clearly illustrates the flow of documents, from initial planning through submission and final approval.
In this example, the dashboard tracks a total of 279 drawings, of which:
· 209 have been submitted,
· 130 have received approval,
· And 70 are still planned to be submitted.
This funnel view allows users to quickly assess how efficiently the submittal process is moving forward, and whether any documents are stuck in early stages.
It’s especially useful for tracking shop drawings, design documents, and method statements in fast-paced construction projects where documentation flow is critical to avoid site delays.
Approvals Status
In addition to tracking submission progress, the Engineering Power BI Dashboard includes a visual breakdown of approval codes to help users assess the quality and readiness of submitted documents.
This column chart categorizes submittals based on the response they received, typically labeled as Code A, B, C, or D, which reflect different levels of approval:
- Code A: Approved with no comments — ready for construction (9 items)
- Code B: Approved with minor comments — construction can proceed (121 items)
- Code C: Revise and resubmit — not approved (67 items)
- Code D: Rejected (4 items)
This visual allows engineers, consultants, and document controllers to quickly understand how many submittals are fully approved versus those that need further revision.
It helps teams focus their attention on clearing pending or problematic documents and ensures that field/site teams only proceed with approved and coordinated content.
Submittals Detailed Data
To balance the visual summaries, the Engineering Power BI Dashboard also includes a comprehensive data table that lists every individual submittal in full detail.
This table allows users to go beyond high-level charts and explore the specifics of each drawing or document.

The table includes columns for:
· Project Number
· Item Name (e.g., shop drawing title)
· Building/Zone
· Trade (e.g., base design, detail design)
· Revision Number
· Submittal Date
· Return Date
· Approval Status
· Approval Code
This format makes it easy for engineering teams, consultants, and planners to filter, review, and track the lifecycle of every submittal.
For example, users can instantly see whether a drawing was approved on time, which revision was submitted, or whether the document was marked with a “B” code requiring minor comments.
Having all this data centralized in a single dashboard removes the need to switch between spreadsheets, emails, or document logs, saving time and reducing the risk of missed updates.
It also ensures all stakeholders are aligned with the current status of every technical document across all projects.
This detailed view is what makes the engineering shop drawing dashboard not just a reporting tool, but a reliable source of truth for document control and project readiness.
If you’re interested in building such dashboards for your projects, we offer a service where we create a smart reporting system for your projects.
Imagine managing a project where every update takes hours to find, decisions are made with old data, and every meeting starts with, “Are these numbers right?” It’s a constant struggle.
A smart reporting system gives you clear, up-to-date insights so you can make the right decisions, stay on track, and avoid last-minute surprises without the stress.

Filters (Code, Status, and Trade)
To make navigation easier and insights more actionable, the engineering Power BI dashboard includes interactive filters that allow users to narrow down the data with precision. All visuals and tables on the page can be filtered using three key parameters:
- Code – to filter submittals based on their approval classification (e.g., A, B, C, D)
- Status – to view only Approved, Pending, or Returned items
- Trade – to separate and analyze documents by category, such as Base Design or Detail Design
Whether you’re reviewing overdue approvals (approvals that their time has been passed) or checking design progress for a specific trade, the filter system makes the dashboard fully adaptable to your role and objective.
Search by Submittal Name
At the very top of the engineering Power BI dashboard, you’ll find a convenient search bar that allows users to quickly locate any submittal by its drawing name.
This feature is especially useful on large projects where hundreds of submittals are managed simultaneously.
It eliminates the need to scroll through long lists and ensures that project teams can access the information they need in seconds, saving time and reducing errors in document coordination.
