How to avoid dangling relationships in Primavera P6
In the primavera schedule dangling relationships refer to logical connections or dependencies between activities that are not properly defined or resolved. These relationships are considered “dangling” because they lack a clear relationship to other activities in the project schedule, potentially leading to inaccuracies or inconsistencies in the scheduling logic.
Dangling relationships can occur for various reasons, including
1- Invalid Relationships
The logical relationships between activities may not be valid or appropriate for the project schedule, such as a Finish-to-Finish (FF) relationship without a corresponding Start or Finish Activity.

In this example, the Activity “Concrete Columns First Floor “has a successor and a Predecessor, so the relationship of this activity is dangling.

So, we need to make the relationship for this activity logical by making the predecessor and successor relationship F.S.

2- Missing Predecessors or Successors
An activity may have defined predecessor or successor relationships, but the corresponding activities are not in the project schedule.

3- Deleted Activities
Activities previously linked to other activities may have been deleted from the schedule, leaving dangling relationships behind.

For example:

Activity “Underground-3S-UG” has a logical relationship in the schedule, but what will happen if we delete this activity?

After deleting the activity “Underground Tank Pump-3S-UG” from the schedule, we will find dangling activities without a predecessor or successor in our example, this case happened to the Activity “Underground Tank Pump-3S-UG”

Now this Activity is dangling and the relationships for the activity need to be solved.
How do you find the dangling activities in your schedule?
1. Dangling start activities
From your Primavera P6 toolbar, open tools then filter and make these commands.

2. Dangling Finish Activities
From your Primavera P6 toolbar, open tools then filter and make these commands.

Summary
Dangling relationships can affect the accuracy and reliability of the project schedule, potentially resulting in incorrect calculations of critical path, project duration, and resource allocation. Therefore, it’s important for planning engineers to regularly review and resolve any dangling relationships in Primavera P6 to ensure the sequence of the schedule and the successful execution of the project.
