Cost and Costing
The length of a project can be from just a couple of months to several years and in this time the people working in the project need to be well taken care of. This means that they need to be paid their wages so that they can continue working. The scope of this procedure is to help the project planner have a smooth time when it comes to project costing.
Procedure
Project management entails a lot of things including managing the funds and cost. As a project manager you first of all need to make sure that use the right methodology when coming up with the costing. You have to take into consideration all the costs incurred. The direct costs need to be well outlined and these include the equipment costs, the staff and the consumables just to mention a few. The indirect costs also need to be looked at very keenly and these are normally based on estimates and not to mention the direct costs such as the resources that are going to be used.
If you are unsure of how to calculate the cost of project then you can make use of the different software that is available for doing such calculations. These are not only going to save you time but they also going to make sure that you come up with just the right estimates. The software is easy to use and you are going to save time when you make use of such software.
You need to make sure that you are flexible while doing the project costing. This is because the cost of the resources may change along the way and this will end up causing you a lot of frustrations. However, this does not mean that you come up with a budget that is too extravagant even for the owner.
In case you are new at project management, it would be wise to seek advice from people who have been in the field for some time. This will give you the chance to learn from their mistakes and will also give you an idea of what you are supposed to do. Coming up with estimates is not always very easy especially if this is something that you have never done before.
Project costing will give the client the chance to look at what they are required to pay and decide whether they are okay with the estimates or not. So as not to go too much over the budget, you can ask the client what they are willing to pay for the cost of project so that you can know what you will be working with. This however does not mean that you have to settle for just what is being offered. If the amount is too little then you need to put this across because in the end you will be the one who will have to work on the project and it will only frustrate you when the resources are not enough due to poor budgeting.
