One of the most grueling aspects of a manager’s job is counseling an employee who is not performing to his standards. When dealing with negatives, put aside all emotions from the issues, and actualize the facts. Ask the employee to create a written work plan to point out what the new behaviors will be and by when they will be put into practice.

Evaluation time is the opportunity for you to voice your appreciation for how the employee has changed his or her behavior to improve the quality of their work. 

Your role and responsibility as the manager is to support the employee through this process. The outcome may be that the employee will choose to continue working in your business or may choose to leave.
