In our practical life we do project management all the time, for example if you are planning to drive your car to go to your work – This is a project– you will find that you did a planning to your small project (Going to the work) Do you believe it ?!, Let’s see what would be your Sample Project Management Plan :
You have start date (Time to wake up) and completion date (Time you finish your work).
You have your own activity list:
2.1: wake up on 7:30 AM
2.2: complete your dress up, breakfast and prepare a sandwich for lunch by 8:00 AM
2.3: Drive your car throw your favorite road to the work from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM
2.4: Work from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM
2.5: Take your lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
2.6: Resume your work from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM
2.7: Drive your car back to home from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM
You don’t believe me that you did all that? Let’s check out. What if a friend of you asked you to lift him to the work in your way and he said to you he we will be waiting for you 10 minutes away from your home, you will find yourself telling him okay wait me on 8:10, why 8:10? Because you know that you will move from your home by 8:00 and the distance to your friend 10 minutes so you should be there by 8:10. This is a basic Project Management Skills.
Do you know that you plan for procurement in your Sample Project Management Plan? Yes you bought the bread and the cheese for your lunch sandwich one day ago.
Can you imagine that you planned the risks also? Yes by choose the long but not crowded road (Your favorite Road) you mitigate the risk of being late to your work.
So if you succeeded to go to your work on time you are a good planner. But this is not the only project you can plan for it, there are much bigger projects we want to learn how to plan it and that is the aim of our course.
Scheduling is just one component of planning. Good planning takes into account all the knowledge areas . That means you need to consider budgets, procurement, risks, human resources, etc. as part of you planning.
As we noticed in the different between planning and scheduling, to manage a project we need to built up a management plan not just a schedule !!!
This project management plan contains the required information to update the current status of the project and should be updated whenever new event occurred affect the current plan, i.e. ( delays in the procurement, variation orders or new risks…etc.)
