Are you facing this error message while attempting to import an Excel sheet into Primavera P6? Many planners face this issue when trying to transfer their work from Excel into the software. In this article, we will explore the potential causes of this error and provide effective solutions to help you successfully complete the import process.
Why Planners use Excel not only Primavera P6
- Some planners choose to perform some tasks on Excel rather than using Primavera only; some planners use Power Query to make the activities that will be added to Primavera to gain time since it is only a press to create repetitive activities in Power Query and import it to Primavera P6 after. In contrast, others prefer to manually add activities in Primavera one by one.
- Some planners prefer to add relationships in Excel for repetitive floors, while others prefer to add relationships in Primavera.
- Another case is adding the cost, some planners assign one resource in Primavera on all activities, then export the activities, and add the cost in Excel from the BOQ using equations from Excel.

Solutions for the Error message while importing an Excel sheet to P6
1. Only the Exported Sheets Should be Imported (Remove Added Sheets)
You need to check before importing that you did not add any sheets in the Excel file that will be imported. You exported an Excel file from Primavera with only those two sheets. Make sure you import only those two sheets back.
2. Closing the Excel Sheet before Importing
Make sure that while importing, you do not leave the Excel sheet open.
3. Changing the Format in the Excel Sheet
Make sure after finishing that you match the format of Primavera. For instance, numbers exported from Primavera P6 are considered text. Like the figure below.

How do you make it text like the Primavera P6 format?
Choose the range you want to change, then from the “Data” ribbon, choose “Text to Columns” and choose “Text” then “Finish”.
You will find that the format has changed and the numbers have moved to the left side of the cell.
4. Equations in The Imported Sheet
Make sure after finishing your work on the Excel sheet that you do not have any equations (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, etc.)
After finishing, select the range that needs to be changed, right click on the mouse, choose “copy” and then “Paste 123”.
5. Restarting
Sometimes the sheet could be fine, and there were no problems inside it as mentioned above. However, the sheet is still working in the back. You can check the task manager and ensure that the Excel task ended and is not running in the back, or you can restart your computer completely.
Conclusion
In conclusion, encountering errors while importing an Excel sheet into Primavera P6 can be frustrating, but understanding the potential causes and applying the right solutions can help resolve the issue efficiently. By ensuring data accuracy, proper formatting, and compatibility with Primavera’s requirements, planners can streamline the import process and avoid disruptions. Addressing such technical challenges enhances productivity and ensures seamless integration between Excel and Primavera P6, ultimately supporting more efficient project planning and management.
